Generals' Slow Start Leads to 80-46 Loss to R-MC

LEXINGTON, Va. — Randolph-Macon opened the game on a 19-4 run on its way to an 80-46 victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team on Monday evening in the Warner Center.

The Yellow Jackets (11-10, 7-5 ODAC) scored the first seven points of the game on a layup by senior guard Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy), a three-pointer by sophomore forward Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) and a layup by first-year forward Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua). The Generals (10-11, 3-9 ODAC) answered with a layup by senior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) and a layup by junior guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) to trim the margin to 7-4 with 14:37 left in the half.

R-MC then netted the next 12 points to push the lead to 19-4 at the 10:39 mark. The Yellow Jackets grabbed their first 20 point lead (31-11) on a free throw by junior guard Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) with 6:05 remaining in the half. Over the final six minutes of the stanza, R-MC outscored W&L, 15-8, to take a 27-point lead (46-19) into the break.

The Generals shot just 24.0 percent (6-of-25) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and missed all six of their three-point attempts. R-MC netted 53.1 percent (17-of-32) of its shots from the floor and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from long range.

The Blue and White made a mini run at the start of the second half. With six points from sophomore forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), the Generals cut the lead to 22 (50-28) with 16:13 left in the game, but the Yellow Jackets pushed the lead up to 28, 60-32, on a triple by Taylor with 11:38 remaining on the clock. R-MC extended the lead over 30 points in the final 10 minutes before reaching the final margin of 80-46.

Murtha was the only W&L player in double figures with 17 points on 6-of-10 from the floor. Kleinlein added nine points. Moore notched a game-high 21 points, to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Sean Ryan (Plainfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) recorded 14 points.

The Blue and White finished the game at 27.3 percent (15-of-55) from the field and 6.7 percent (1-of-15) from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets were 27-of-58 (46.6 percent) from the floor and 12-of-21 (57.1 percent) from long range.

R-MC held a 45-29 advantage on the glass, and totaled 19 assists compared to five for W&L.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest.
