Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College limited Washington and Lee to just 315 total yards and 5-of-16 on third-down conversions in posting a 30-20 victory over the Generals in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Jopson Field.
The Generals (5-4, 4-2) stopped the Eagles on a 4th-and-1 from the 50-yardline on their first offensive set and completed a 36-yard pass on the first play of the ensuing series to drive into the red zone. However, the Eagles' defense stiffened inside the 5-yardline and W&L settled for a 24-yard field goal by senior Matt Underhill (Bethesda, Md. / Landon) for a 3-0 lead at 7:52 of the first quarter.
Bridgewater (4-5, 3-3) answered back on its next series, knotting the score at 3-3 on a 24-yard field goal from senior placekicker Anthony Rossi at the 2:30 mark of the first quarter. Rossi made it 6-3 with a 39-yarder at the 10:36 mark of the second quarter and the Generals knotted the game at 6-6 just before halftime with a 38-yard Underhill field goal.
The Eagles took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 68 yards in six plays to grab a 13-6 lead on a 20-yard touchdown run from sophomore wide receiver Alex Galloway.
Midway through the third quarter, Bridgewater held the Generals on downs at the W&L 48-yardline and increased its lead to 20-6 nine plays later on a a 4-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Jay Scroggins to senior tight end Keith Jennings.
W&L mounted its most successful offensive possession after the ensuing kickoff, driving 65 yards on 10 plays, as senior running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) found the end zone with a 1-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-13 with 1:01 left in the third period.
The Eagles opened a door for the Generals early in the fourth quarter when they fumbled a punt at their own 31-yardline. Sophomore defensive back Patrick Ryan (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) both forced and recovered the fumble, setting up W&L with a short field. Senior running back Evan Hinkle (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) took advantage four plays later with a 10-yard touchdown run that tied the score at 20-20 with 11:20 remaining in the contest.
BC bounced back from the error, producing a 9-play, 60-yard drive that resulted in a third field goal from Rossi, this time from 31 yards out for a 23-20 lead at the 7:10 mark. The Eagles' defense then forced W&L into a 3-and-out and drove to the W&L 28-yardline on the next possession where they faced a 4th-and-5 with just under one minute remaining. Scroggins ran play action and found sophomore wide receiver Rayvon Johnson with a 28-yard touchdown pass to put the game away.
W&L amassed a season-low 193 rushing yards in the contest led by Hinkle, who rushed 15 times for 72 yards and a touchdown. Hollerith had 48 yards and a score on 12 carries, while senior quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn. / St. Luke's) posted 38 yards on 14 carries and completed 8-of-18 passes for 122 yards. Junior wide receiver Witt Hawkins (Memphis, Tenn. / Memphis University School) caught three passes for 55 yards. On defense, sophomore defensive back Thomas Freeland (Franklin, Tenn. / Ensworth) and junior linebacker Max Garrett (Fairfield, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) each totaled 13 tackles.
For Bridgewater, Scroggins completed 21-of-34 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while junior running back Malivai Barker tallied 111 yards on 22 carries. Jennings had seven catches for 60 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore defensive back Chance Morris totaled a team-high 10 tackles and a sack.
Washington and Lee will conclude its season on Saturday by hosting Shenandoah for a 1:00 pm contest.
