Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon scored 30 points in the fourth period to claim an 84-76 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
The Generals (2-3, 1-1) led 58-56 with 9:17 remaining in the game following a pair of free throws from junior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale). However, the Yellow Jackets (3-1, 1-0) used a 13-2 run over the next 4:20 to assume a nine-point lead (69-60) with 4:57 remaining in the contest. First-year forward Kelly Williams scored six straight points to spearhead the run, while junior guard Kareema Conteh added five points during the stretch.
W&L cut it to seven points on several occasions from that point on, but could get no closer as the Yellow Jackets made 11-of-17 (.647) shots in the decisive fourth period to claim their fifth straight win over the Generals.
W&L led for much of the first half and held a 41-34 lead at the halftime break behind 13 first-half points from Perszyk. R-MC began the third period with a 12-0 run as the Generals turned the ball over on five of their first six possessions of the second half. However, trailing 46-41 with 7:03 left, W&L regained its composure and used a 9-3 run to take the lead back (50-49) on a layup by senior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) with 3:36 left in the period. The lead would change hands four times before first-year guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) drained a three-pointer to give W&L a 56-54 lead entering the fourth period.
Randolph-Macon shot 46.5 percent (33-71) from the floor in the contest behind its torrid shooting in the fourth period. The Yellow Jackets also claimed a 45-34 advantage on the boards and forced 25 W&L turnovers. The Generals hung in the contest by hitting 27-of-35 (.771) free throws.
Perszyk led the Blue & White with a season-high 25 points and four steals. She set a program record for free throws made and attempted in a game, going 17-of-19 from the foul line in the contest. Casey tallied 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while junior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) posted 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Junior guard Andrea Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) chipped in nine points and a career-best seven boards.
Williams paced the Yellow Jackets with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Conteh notched 18 points, while first-year guard Michal Ross added 12 points and five steals.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Messiah for a 12:00 pm contest.
