Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — First-year outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) registered a collegiate-high 17 kills to lead the second-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over seventh-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament at the Warner Center.
The Generals (23-9) grabbed the early lead in the contest by taking the first, 25-22. The Marlins (16-15) countered with a 25-13 win in the second. W&L flipped the script in the third, claiming the stanza, 25-12. The fourth set was close midway through with the score tied 15-15.
The Blue and White registered three straight points to grab an 18-15 advantage. VWC trimmed the deficit to 20-19, but the Generals closed out the match with five straight points, including the final two coming on service aces by sophomore outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard), to win the set, 25-19, and the match.
Meade totaled her 17 kills on 35 attempts with only five errors for a .343 hitting percentage. She also had six digs and two service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) added 13 kills and 13 digs.
First-year setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) notched 36 assists and 13 digs, and junior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) had 13 digs and six service aces. Senior middle blocker Ellie Darbyshire (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) had four kills and five blocks.
Senior outside hitter Tiffany Barrett led all players with 18 kills. Junior setter Emilee Pierson had 13 assists and 11 digs.
The Generals will take on third-seeded Lynchburg in the semifinals at Randolph-Macon on Friday. The match time is still to be announced.
