W&L Women's Soccer Defeats Bridgewater, 1-0

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute to help lift the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater on Saturday at Watt Field.

Neither team could get past the others' defensive line in the first half, as the two teams combined to take just seven shots in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Midway through the second half, Engeland collected the ball in the center of the box, and fired a shot that went just over the head of Bridgewater (8-2-1, 1-1-1) junior goalkeeper Hayley Talbott and into the goal. The Generals (8-3-0, 4-1-0) defense held strong for the rest of the half to keep the Eagles from scoring an equalizer.

Both teams took seven shots for the game, while W&L held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) played all 90 minutes and made four saves for W&L. Talbott also played the full 90 minutes and made five stops.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to 13th-ranked Lynchburg for a 7:00 pm start.
