No. 5 W&L Men's Soccer Falls to No. 13 Messiah, 4-0

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Four different players scored for 13th-ranked Messiah to lead the Falcons past the fifth-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

Senior defender Jacob Bender netted the game-winner (8-0-3) in the fourth minute, after he received a cross into the middle of the box from senior defender Will Cochran. The Generals (9-2) looked to even the score on a counter-attack, but a team save by Messiah kept W&L off the board.

Sophomore defender Justin Brautigam gave Messiah a 2-0 lead at 28:22, when he headed the ball into the back of the net off of Bender's corner kick. Messiah would take its lead into halftime.

Bender dished out his second assist of the game in the 59th minute to junior midfielder Kirby Robbins to increase the lead to 3-0. The Falcons found the back of the net again with 8:44 remaining in the contest when sophomore midfielder Samuel Ruiz Plaza fired a long shot from outside the box to reach the final margin of 4-0.

Messiah held a 20-6 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Junior Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played the full 90 minutes and made four saves for the Generals. Sophomore Connor Bell also played the full 90 minutes and stopped five shots for the Falcons.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts No. 19 Lynchburg at 3:00 pm.
