Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team was held to a .134 hitting percentage, as 16th-ranked Mary Washington came into the Warner Center on Wednesday evening and earned a 3-0 victory.
The Eagles (18-1) hit .373 as a team with 49 kills on 102 attempts with 11 errors. Sophomore middle hitter Leslie Walters paced the team with 10 kills in only 13 attempts for a .769 hitting percentage. The Generals (14-3) totaled just 31 kills on 97 attempts with 18 errors en route to hitting .134.
Mary Washington made quick work of the Blue and White in the first set, 25-14. The second was headed in the same direction, as the Eagles held a 19-10 advantage late in the stanza. W&L responded with an 11-4 run, including five kills, to close the gap to 23-20.
UMW went ahead, 24-21, but W&L fought off two set points to bring the score to 24-23. First-year outside hitter Savannah Powers ended the set, 25-23, for the Eagles with a kill. The Blue and White could not sustain the momentum in the third, as Mary Washington claimed the set, 25-18, and won the match.
Sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) had nine kills and nine digs to pace W&L. Senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) hit .308 with six kills and two errors on 13 attempts, while adding four blocks. Junior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led the back row with 12 digs.
Powers notched a match-high 13 kills on 28 attempts with two errors (.393 hitting percentage). First-year middle hitter Skyler Sisk had 11 kills and hit .500. Junior libero Jenna Yost recorded 12 digs.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Guilford at 12:30 pm, and Frostburg State at 5:00 pm.
