Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. — Susquehanna tallied the final four points in the fifth set to defeat the Washington and Lee volleyball team, 3-2, at the Emory National Invitational on Friday.
The Generals (21-8) won the first set, 25-18, but the River Hawks (28-6) claimed the second and the third, 25-23 and 25-23. The Blue and White forced a fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-19.
W&L scored seven of the first 11 points in the fifth to grab a 7-4 lead. Susquehanna evened the frame at 9-9, but the Generals went on a 5-3 run to hold a 14-12 advantage. The River Hawks won the next two points on a kill by senior right side hitter Erin Byrne and a W&L attack error. Senior outside hitter Marykate Sherkness gave Susquehanna a 15-14 lead with a kill, and then senior middle hitter Leana Carvin registered a solo block to take the set, 16-14, and win the match.
Senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) had 15 kills and one error on 24 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage. She also had seven blocks and two digs. Sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) totaled 16 kills and nine digs.
First-year outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) had 10 kills and 21 digs, while first-year outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) contributed nine kills and 21 digs. Junior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) recorded 20 digs, and first-year setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) did a little bit of everything with 42 assists, six blocks, seven digs and three kills.
Junior outside hitter Morgan Lowe had a team-high 16 kills and a match-high 26 digs. Sherkness added 15 kills and Carvin had 10 kills and four blocks.
The Generals play two more matches on Saturday at the Emory Invitational. W&L takes on Clarkson at 11:00 am and then face eighth-ranked Emory at 1:00 pm.
