Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) scored the game-winning goal to lift the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Randolph-Macon on Wednesday afternoon.
Engeland scored her fourth game-winning goal of the season in the 27th minute when she scored on a free kick from 27 yards out. The Generals (11-3-1, 7-1-1) held an 8-1 advantage in shots in the first half.
Strong defense by both teams in the second half led to only eight shots and one on goal. First-year goalkeeper Leeann Passaro (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School) saved the lone shot on goal to keep Randolph-Macon (5-7-3, 4-4-1) from finding an equalizer. The Generals held onto the lead for the remainder of the contest to pull off the win.
For the game, W&L outshot the Yellow Jackets, 17-12, and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Passaro (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School) played the full 90 minutes in goal and made one stop for the Generals. First-year Christina Newman split time in goal with senior Lindsay Zachman. Newman made three saves for the Yellow Jackets in 45 minutes of play.
W&L finishes regular season play on Saturday when it travels to Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm game.
