NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team was held to a .113 hitting percentage, as 20th-ranked Christopher Newport defeated the Generals, 3-0, on Saturday at the Freeman Center.

The Blue and White (19-6) stayed close in the first set, 25-20, but the Captains (21-7) closed out the match by winning the second and the third, 25-13 and 25-14. W&L had 26 kills and 15 errors on 97 total attempts to reach its hitting percentage. CNU hit .267 with 42 kills and 14 errors on 105 attempts.

Sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) led the Generals with seven kills. Sophomore outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) added six kills and a match-high 12 digs.

First-year outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled five kills, while senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) had four kills and three blocks. With the three blocks, Shand moved into a tie for second (412 blocks) on the W&L career list. Susan Gaillard '06 also had 412, and Virginia Yoerg '97 holds the all-time record with 413.

CNU's senior outside hitter Maddie McCann led all players with 11 kills. Senior outside hitter Briana Sutton had nine kills and senior middle blocker Hannah Miller contributed eight.

The Generals play Penn State-Harrisburg later on Saturday in a neutral-site match at CNU.
