W&L Women's Soccer Plays 2-2 Draw with Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team saw a string of six straight shutouts come to an end in a 2-2 draw with Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at Watt Field.

The Generals (10-3-1, 6-1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 23-minute mark when sophomore midfielder Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) placed the ball in the lower corner after receiving an assist in the middle of the box from sophomore forward Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School).

Virginia Wesleyan (8-4-3, 5-0-3) would even the score 80 seconds later when first-year midfielder Ryan McCurry crossed the ball to the top of box for first-year forward Marli Hayward, who gathered and shot the ball just past W&L sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) at 24:20.

The Marlins took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute when a miscue by the Generals' defense gave Hayward a wide-open shot on the open goal, which she converted.  However, senior forward Tricia Jessee (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) scored the game-tying goal at 63:08 after heading in a shot from junior midfielder Chandler Wickers (Potola Valley, Calif. / Menlo School) that bounced off the crossbar.

Jessee had another header near the end of regulation that would have given the Generals the win, but it hit off the crossbar and the VWC defense cleared the ball away to move the game into overtime.

Strong defensive play by both teams in the extra sessions resulted in just two combined shots and the teams walked away with the draw.

W&L outshot Virginia Wesleyan 15-9 and held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Nolan played the full 110 minutes and made three saves for the Generals. First-year Taylor Chapman played the full game for the Marlins and made four stops.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 4:00 pm game.
