W&L Women's Soccer Defeats Eastern Mennonite, 2-0

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team picked up its sixth straight shutout win with a 2-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (10-3, 6-1) grabbed the early lead when senior defender Ashley Hogan (North Chesterfield, Va. / Monacan) received the ball deep in the box off of a throw-in from senior midfielder Katie Pettit (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) and deposited it in the goal in the 13th minute.

Junior defender Kelsey Jervis (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) gave the Generals an insurance goal at 34:56 after collecting a bouncing ball around the six-yard box and firing it past EMU (6-8-1, 2-5) first-year goalkeeper Lean Wenger.

W&L maintained its 2-0 lead in the second half with the ball mostly being played in the middle of the field. The Generals had multiple opportunities to expand their lead, but were not able to find the back of the net in the concluding 45 minutes.

The Generals held a commanding 27-0 shot advantage and an 11-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) played all 90 minutes, but did not have to make any stops for the Generals. Wenger also played the full 90 minutes for the Royals and made 11 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan at 3:00 pm.
