W&L Women's Soccer Takes Down No. 10 Lynchburg, 1-0

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior forward Tricia Jessee (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) scored in the 55th-minute to lift the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over 10th-ranked Lynchburg on Wednesday evening at Shellenberger Field.

The win ended the Hornets' 82-game ODAC regular season unbeaten streak that dated back to a 2-0 loss to Virginia Wesleyan on September 26, 2009.  The Generals also downed the Hornets that season in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament by score of 2-1.

Neither team could crack the others' defense in the opening 45 minutes of play, as the two teams combined to take just nine shots.

With the second half just getting underway, Jessee scored at the 54:12 mark when she headed the ball into the back of the net off of sophomore Danielle Spickard's (Valencia, Calif. / William S. Hart) corner kick. The Generals' (9-3, 5-1) defense held off multiple Hornet (8-1-3, 3-1-2) attacks to secure the victory.

Lynchburg held a 13-7 advantage in shots, while both teams took two corners each. Sophomore Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) played the full 90 minutes and made four saves, including a diving stop on a low shot with just over four minutes remaining in the contest. Senior Tess Frelick also played all 90 minutes and made two stops for the Hornets.

W&L returns to action on October 18 when it hosts Eastern Mennonite at 4:00 pm.
