Late Triple Forces OT, but W&L Men's Hoops Loses at Guilford, 71-68

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team scored the final seven points in regulation to force overtime, but Guilford held off the Generals in the extra period to earn a 71-68 overtime victory on Saturday at Ragan-Brown Field House.

The Quakers (11-7, 6-3 ODAC) sophomore forward Dominique Henderson split two free throws with 1:47 left in the second half to give Guilford at 62-55 advantage. On the ensuing possession, senior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) drained two free throws to cut the lead to five (62-57) with 1:25 left on the clock.

Following a steal by first-year guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens), Franz was sent back to the charity stripe and made both to pull the Generals (10-8, 3-6 ODAC) to within 62-59 with 45 seconds remaining. The Quakers missed a three-pointer, and then junior guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) drained a triple to tie the game (62-62) with 12 ticks on the clock. W&L forced sophomore guard Jarrod Rogers to miss a 15-footer with five seconds left to send the game to overtime.

The Generals took a 64-62 lead with 3:48 left in the extra period on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park). Guilford tied the game on the next trip down with a pair of free throws by senior forward Will Freeman.

Kearns netted two from the charity stripe with 2:37 remaining in the contest to push the score to 66-64, but the Quakers scored six straight points to grab a 70-66 advantage with 31 seconds left. Kearns brought the Generals to within two, 70-68, on a layup with 14 seconds to go in the game.

Sophomore guard Justen Best split a pair of free throws to extend the Guilford lead to 71-68 with nine ticks on the clock. The Quakers surrounded the Generals at the three-point line in the final seconds, and W&L failed to get off a shot before the final buzzer.    

Kearns tallied a game-high 24 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Murtha and Kleinlein each added 10 points. Junior forward Trever Hyatt came off the bench to lead the Quakers in scoring with 14 points. Junior guard Zachary Houston played the entire game and totaled seven points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Guilford held a 40-32 advantage in rebounding, including a 16-8 edge on the offensive glass. The Quakers outscored W&L, 15-7, in second-chance points. The Guilford bench also totaled 40 points compared to 10 by the Blue and White reserves.  

The Generals return to action on Tuesday, when they host Emory & Henry at 7:00 pm.
