Box Score SALEM, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team rode a strong first period for the second straight day, as the Generals posted a 77-50 win over Swarthmore in the second day of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic at Roanoke College on Sunday.
The Generals (6-5) held a 7-5 lead with just over five minutes left in the opening period, but proceeded to use a 10-0 run over the next 3:59 to take a 17-5 lead with 1:05 left en route to holding a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. Senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) and sophomore guard Andrea Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) keyed the run, combining for 12 of the Generals' final 14 points of the quarter. Hendricks scored four straight to start the surge, while Ferrero scored eight points in the final 2:49 of the opening period.
W&L steadily built upon its lead in the second quarter, opening up an 18-point advantage (37-19) following a layup by junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) with 1:48 left in the half. The Generals carried a 39-22 lead into the intermission.
Swarthmore (3-7) couldn't cut into the W&L lead during the third period and the Generals used a 9-0 run midway through the fourth period to increase the lead to 27 points (66-39) with 4:11 left to play, as the Blue & White posted its third straight win by 20 points or more.
W&L limited the Garnet Tide to just 33.3 percent (16-48) shooting and forced 19 turnovers. The Blue & White shot 43.5 percent (30-69) and had 16 assists to just 10 turnovers.
Sophomore guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) paced four players in double-digits for the Generals, totaling 12 points and four steals. Clifford and sophomore center Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) tallied 11 points apiece and Ferrero finished with 10 points. Hendricks stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, five rebounds and four assists. Both Clifford and Perszyk were selected to the all-tournament team.
Sophomore forward Raina Williams led Swarthmore with 12 points. Senior forward Abbey Deckard added 10 points and seven rebounds en route to earning all-tournament laurels.
Washington and Lee will look to extend its current winning streak to four games when it travels to Lynchburg College on Wednesday for a 6:00 pm contest.
