GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team won five of seven contested matches but dropped a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Friday evening, falling to Johns Hopkins (40-14) and Gettysburg (35-17).
The injury-riddled Generals (6-9, 0-4) forfeited six weight classes against Johns Hopkins and five against the Bullets, but had three wrestlers post a perfect 2-0 record on the day.
First-year 133-pounder Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) won his first match over Johns Hopkins' Brandon Tran by major decision, notching a 16-4 victory. He then logged a 16-1 technical fall (2:15) over Gettysburg's Brandon Coffey in his second match to improve to 28-4 overall. He can tie the W&L season record for victories set by senior Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) last season (29-9) with one more victory.
Sophomore 141-pounder Alex Pollera (Warren, N.J. / Watchung Hills Regional) posted a 10-1 major decision over Connor Mauriello of Johns Hopkins and then registered a win by fall (2:26) over Jake Bracken of Gettysburg in the nightcap.
Tassoni opened with a pin (4:30) of Johns Hopkins' Isaac Morales at 184 pounds and then posted a win by forfeit against Gettysburg to run his record to 24-2 on the season.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it takes on McDaniel and Ursinus at Muhlenberg College. Action is slated to begin at 11:00 am.
