Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash. / Bethel) scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Emory & Henry to a 68-63 ODAC women's basketball victory over Washington and Lee on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The two teams played even through the opening seven minutes of the contest, as the Generals (10-8, 5-4) held a 14-13 lead at the 3:34 mark of the first quarter. However, the Wasps (13-4, 7-2) took over at that point, using a 20-6 run over the next 10:21 to assume a 33-20 lead with 3:13 left in the half. W&L went cold from the field, hitting just 2-of-12 shots and committing six turnovers during the span. On the other end, Farr scored seven points to spark the E&H offense.
W&L rebounded in the final 3:13 of the half, out-scoring the Wasps 10-3 to cut the deficit to six points (36-30) at the break. Junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) and senior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) both nailed triples during the run.
Two quick baskets to start the second half ran the E&H lead back to double-digits (40-30) at the 8:33 mark of the third period, but the Generals made a run that sliced it to a three-point game (48-45) with 48 seconds left in the period. Sophomore guard Andrea Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) started the rally with a three-pointer at the 5:48 mark, one of two three-pointers she canned during the run.
A layup by Farr with 8:50 remaining increased the Emory & Henry lead to nine points (54-45) and the Wasps held an eight-point advantage (58-50) with 5:03 left.
W&L made a run at gaining the lead for the first time since the first quarter, using a 9-2 run over the next 3:29 to make it a one-point game (60-59) with 1:34 left in the contest. Senior guard Alena Hamrick (Roanoke, Va. / Hidden Valley) drained a three-pointer at 3:24 to make it a 58-53 game and Clifford followed with a layup at 2:52 to make it a one possession contest (58-55). First-year guard Taylor Blevins (Abingdon, Va. / Abingdon) scored a layup at 2:36 to make it 60-55, but senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) sunk a jumper with 2:18 left to bring the deficit back to three points (60-57).
A Hendricks' layup at 1:34 made it a 60-59 game and the Generals forced a miss the next time down. However, E&H junior guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va. / Amelia Acad.) secured the offensive rebound and was fouled, making both free throws for a three-point lead. Clifford was fouled on the ensuing possession for W&L, splitting a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game. However, that was as close as the Generals would get, as the Wasps canned 6-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final 31 seconds to hold on for the win.
W&L shot 40.4 percent (23-57) from the floor and drilled 8-of-20 (.400) three-pointers, but could not overcome 16 turnovers and a 43-32 disadvantage on the boards. Hendricks led the way for the Blue & White with 11 points and seven rebounds. Corvino and Clifford both finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Farr finished 11-of-16 (.688) from the field to lead the Wasps. Blevins contributed 12 points and five boards.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Guilford for a 4:30 pm contest.
