Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Lynchburg College held Washington and Lee to just 9-of-34 (.265) shooting in the second half en route to posting a 65-48 win over the Generals in ODAC women's basketball action on Sunday evening at the Warner Center.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for W&L (10-7, 5-3). The Generals trailed 19-14 after the first period and held the Hornets (14-3, 7-1) to just 2-for-11 (.182) shooting from the floor in the second period to climb to within one point (25-24) at the halftime break.
W&L took its first lead (26-25) since the 3:55 mark of the first quarter when sophomore forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) hit a layup to start the second half. Senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) knotted the score at 28-28 just over a minute later, but the Hornets then went on a 10-0 run over the next 2:19 to assume a 38-28 lead with 4:55 left in the third period. Senior forward Chaney Forbush (Clifton, Va./Centreville) scored four points during the run.
Despite shooting just 29.4 percent (5-17) from the floor in the third period, the Generals remained within striking distance and trailed by seven points (43-36) entering the fourth period.
The Blue & White trimmed the deficit to six points (45-39) with 8:42 left to play, but Forbush sparked a 17-2 run over the next 5:59 that gave LC a commanding 62-41 lead with 2:43 remaining. Forbush started the surge with a three-pointer at the top of the key with 7:46 left and she went on to score nine more points during the run, totaling a game-high 25 markers in the contest.
Washington and Lee finished the game 19-of-62 (.306) from the field and 2-of-15 (.133) from beyond the arc. Junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) led the Generals with 15 points and eight rebounds. Redding tallied 14 points and five boards.
Lynchburg finished 24-of-53 (.453) from the field after making 7-of-10 shots in the final period. Forbush was 10-of-15 overall and snared seven rebounds. Junior guard Sarah Coronel (Brecksville, Ohio / Brecksville-Broadview Heights) registered 15 points and sophomore forward Caroline Naumann (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Catherine's) notched 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Sammi Goldsmith (Jamestown, N.C./Bishop McGuinness) chipped in six points, 10 assists and four steals.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Emory & Henry for a 7:00 pm contest.
