Kleinlein & Murtha Lead Generals to 93-70 Win at William Peace

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team used a 17-0 run in the first half and 15 second-half points by junior guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) to earn a 93-70 victory at William Peace on Saturday.

With the game tied, 10-10, at the 14:51 mark of the opening half, Kleinlein started the Generals' (7-3) run with a layup. Sophomore forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) then scored four straight points, and a jumper by first-year guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) stretched the Blue and White lead to 18-10.

Sophomore forward Joe Sherwood (Madison, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) made a layup to extend the advantage to double figures (20-10) with 12:47 left in the half. Then first-year forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) stole a pass at the top of the key and slammed home a one-handed dunk on the other end.

Senior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) netted a pair of free throws to push the margin to 14 (24-10) and Kleinlein capped the 17-0 spurt with a three-pointer to give W&L a 27-10 lead with 10:50 remaining in the first. The teams would exchange baskets over the final 11 minutes of the stanza, with the Generals holding a 45-29 lead at the break.

The Pacers (5-6) started the second on a 20-8 run over the first six minutes and trimmed the deficit to four, 53-49, with 13:51 left in the contest. Kleinlein responded by hitting four triples over W&L's next eight possessions to push the Generals' lead back to double-digits, 70-53, with 10:16 remaining on the clock. The Blue and White would stetch the lead to 26 (91-65) before reaching the final margin.

Kleinlein finished 5-of-6 from beyond the arc and 8-of-9 from the field for a team-high 22 points. Murtha notched 21 points and eight rebounds. Kearns came off the bench to tally 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Franz had 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

The Generals shot 55.7 percent (34-of-61) from the floor and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the three-point line. W&L held WPU to 22-of-60 (36.7 percent) from the field and 7-of-32 (21.9 percent) from long distance.

Senior guard Nate Strother led the Pacers with a game-high 25 points. First-year guard Sam Johnson scored 14 points off the bench and first-year guard Tre McLean chipped in 10.

The Generals return to ODAC play on Wednesday, when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
