Kelly Propels W&L Women's Basketball to 66-50 Win at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee women's basketball team scored 29 points in the third quarter en route to a 66-50 victory at Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday evening.

The Generals (10-6, 5-2 ODAC) held a slim 25-24 lead at halftime, but the Blue and White came out scorching in the third period. Junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) netted a layup on W&L's first possession, and then senior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) drained a jumper to push the lead to 29-24 with 9:01 left in the period.

The Royals' (11-3, 4-2 ODAC) senior guard Alicia Ygarza made a jumper to trim the deficit to three (29-26), but a layup by sophomore forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) ignited a 10-0 run to push the Generals' advantage to 39-26 with 5:32 left in the quarter. During the spurt, Kelly totaled six points, while senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) and sophomore forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) each added two.

Senior forward Jess Rheinheimer outscored the Generals, 7-5, over the next three minutes to cut the lead to 44-33, but W&L responded with six straight points to extend the advantage to 17 (50-33) with 1:32 left in the third.

A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) with four seconds left in the quarter gave the Blue and White a 54-35 advantage entering the fourth. The Generals extended the lead to 21 points early in the fourth, but EMU won the quarter, 15-12, to reach the final margin.

Kelly led the team with 20 points on 10-of-17 from the floor, while adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Clifford had 16 points and six rebounds, and Hendricks notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

Rheinheimer scored 18 points to lead EMU and first-year guard Lindsey Krisak came off the bench to register 12 points. The Blue and White grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, totaling 14 second-chance points. W&L also forced the Royals to turn the ball over 21 times.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Lynchburg at 2:00 pm.
