Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 78-46 win over Randolph on Saturday evening at the RAD Center.
The Generals (9-6, 4-2) broke open a one-point game (11-10) with 2:23 left in the first period, closing the opening quarter with a 7-0 run to assume an 18-10 advantage entering the second period. Sophomore guard Andrea Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) drilled a three-pointer to open the second quarter and W&L cruised to a 41-24 halftime advantage on the strength of 15 points from junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) and 13 points from Kelly. The Blue & White shot 48.6 percent (18-37) from the floor in the opening half and held a 27-13 edge on the glass.
The two teams played fairly even in the third period and the Generals carried a 20-point lead (62-42) into the final quarter.
Randolph shot just 1-of-19 (.053) from the floor in the final period and W&L out-scored the WildCats (2-13, 0-6) 16-4 in the final 10 minutes to claim its third-straight conference win.
The Generals finished 32-of-65 (.492) from the floor and doubled-up the WildCats on the boards, holding a 52-26 advantage. Kelly shot 10-of-14 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds en route to her career night. Clifford was 8-of-10 from the floor in posting 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) added 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals, while senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) tallied eight points, nine rebounds and four assists.
First-year forward Rebecca Harvey paced Randolph with 13 points and junior forward Korin Harris contributed eight points and six rebounds.
Washington and Lee will look to extend its current winning streak to four games when it travels to Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday for a 7:00 pm contest.
