Strong Second Half Carries H-SC Past W&L Men's Hoops

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hampden-Sydney junior guard Jake Duncan scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, as the Tigers produced a come-from-behind 69-63 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Saturday at Fleet Gymnasium.

The Generals (8-6, 2-4) shot 59.1 percent (13-22) from the field in the first half, drilling 5-of-8 (.625) from downtown to build a 39-29 lead at the break.

First-year guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas / Samuel Clemens) nailed a three-pointer just 24 seconds into the second half to give W&L a 13-point lead (42-29).  However, Duncan scored eight points around a single W&L score in a span of 1:28 to pull H-SC (12-3, 4-2) within seven points (44-37) just 2:07 into the second half.

Duncan's flurry helped the Tigers to a 15-2 run that sliced it to a 46-44 game following another Duncan triple at the 13:12 mark.  Junior guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo. / Chaminade College Prep) stunted the momentum with a layup at 13:06 that made it a four-point game (48-44) and the Generals held the lead until first-year guard Gray Cheers tied the game at 50-50 with a three-pointer at the 10:06 mark.

Hampden-Sydney assumed its first lead since midway through the first half after first-year guard Logan Samuels made a layup at 8:59 for a 52-50 advantage.  Four Kleinlein free throws gave W&L the lead back (54-52), but Duncan hit one from distance for a 55-54 lead that the Tigers would not relinquish.

H-SC stretched out to a six-point lead (64-58) with 3:14 left, but the Generals chipped away and eventually cut it to a two-point game (65-63) after Kearns hit 2-of-3 free throws with 30 seconds remaining.  However, the Tigers made all four from the charity stripe to claim the win.

W&L shot just 24.1 percent (7-29) from the floor in the second half to finish the game at 39.2 percent (20-51).  Kleinlein led the Generals with 17 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the field (3-of-3 from three) and 4-for-4 from the foul line.  Kearns notched 16 points and nine rebounds, and senior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C. / Ravenscroft) added eight points and four assists.

Hampden-Sydney shot 45.8 percent (22-48) from the floor for the game, led by Duncan's 9-of-14 performance, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc.  Senior guard Mike Murray posted 12 points and six assists, while senior forward Mitch Owens had 11 points.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Monday when it hosts Ferrum for an 8:00 pm contest.
