Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 77-59 victory over Roanoke College on Sunday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (7-6, 2-2) trailed 30-29 with 3:46 left in the first half, but closed the second period with an 8-0 run to assume a 37-30 lead at the break. Senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) got things started with a layup at the 3:17 mark and Perszyk scored a layup at 1:58 for a 33-30 lead. Junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) then made a pair of free throws at 1:17 and closed the first-half scoring with a layup at 0:48 for the seven-point halftime advantage.
Roanoke (6-6, 2-2) cut it to a 39-34 game just 1:20 into the second half, but Perszyk keyed a 12-0 W&L run with a three-pointer just 21 seconds later. She ended the run with another triple at the 6:22 mark for a 51-34 lead.
The Maroons cut it to a 12-point game (53-41) on a jumper by junior forward Cary Beahm (Dendron, Va./Tidewater Academy) at the 4:15 mark of the penultimate quarter, but a pair of three's, one by Perszyk and another by Clifford, made it a 19-point game (64-45) heading into the final period.
Perszyk continued her onslaught in the fourth period, draining three more three-pointers to finish 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. She added three steals and three rebounds. Clifford posted 20 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while sophomore forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) totaled 10 points and five boards. Sophomore forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) chipped in six points, five rebounds and a career-high nine assists.
As a team, the Generals shot 44.8 percent (30-67) from the field and hit 10-of-24 (.417) three-pointers. The Blue & White also held a 41-28 advantage on the boards and the Generals committed just 12 turnovers.
Roanoke was paced by Beahm's 18 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Bridget Holleran (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) logged 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while senior forward Anna Carter (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) tallied 10 points and four boards. The Maroons shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the floor.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Shenandoah for a 7:00 pm contest.
