Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee football team set or tied a total of four school records in posting a 63-35 victory over Averett on Friday evening at Wilson Field.
The Generals tallied 712 yards of total offense, breaking the previous school record of 652 that was set against Richmond in 1950. The Blue & White also gained 649 yards on the ground, breaking the previous W&L record of 525 yards set against Shepherd in 1953. It also eclipsed the ODAC record of 503 yards set by W&L in 2012.
Additionally, the Generals tied school marks for rushing touchdowns in a game (9) and PATs in a game (9). All told, the two teams combined for 1,323 yards.
Seven players ran for 50 yards or more for W&L, led by junior running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's), who totaled 115 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. Junior quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn. / St. Luke's) notched 93 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries, while sophomore running back Duncan Maxwell (Jackson, Miss. / Jackson Academy) posted 93 yards on four carries, scoring on a 31-yard touchdown run. Junior Evan Hinkle (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) amassed 91 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries and junior Connor Chess (Fairfax, Va. / Flint Hill) had 81 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Sophomore Walker Brand (Roanoke, Va. / Hidden Valley) and junior Jimmy Dugan (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) also had 50 or more yards, with Brand tallying 76 on eight carries and Dugan notching 52 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.
The Generals jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Cougars got on the board with 3:25 left in the opening period on a 77-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Kelly Hall (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) to junior wide receiver Brandon Couden (High Point, N.C./High Point Central). However, W&L scored three times in the opening 5:21 of the second quarter to race out to a 35-7 lead in holding a 35-14 halftime advantage.
After Averett got the first touchdown of the second half on a 23-yard touchdown run by senior running back Ray Brown (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) at the 10:09 mark of the third quarter, the Generals scored four straight touchdowns to push out to a 63-21 lead with 11:02 left in the fourth quarter.
Nelson finished 2-of-4 passing for 33 yards and junior tight end Jack Taylor (Broad Run, Va./Battlefield) had one catch for 30 yards. Junior linebacker John Carrick (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) recorded a team-best nine tackles.
The Cougars registered 611 total yards led by senior quarterback Drew Evans (Durham, N.C./Riverside), who passed for 256 yards and a touchdown and rushed 10 times for 34 yards and another score. Couden finished with 122 yards and one touchdown on four receptions. Sophomore defensive end Don Warren (Indian Trail, N.C./Porter Ridge) and sophomore safety Elijah Harris (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie) each posted nine tackles to lead the Averett defense.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Sewanee for a 1:00 pm contest.
