W&L Football Defeats Sewanee, 28-10

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead in posting its first 2-0 start since 2011 with a 28-10 win over Sewanee on Saturday at Wilson Field.

The Generals (2-0) found success running the ball early, driving to the Sewanee 22-yardline on the game's opening possession before fumbling the ball away.  However, W&L would capitalize on each of its next three drives, utilizing big plays in the running game.

Sophomore running back Duncan Maxwell (Jackson, Miss. / Jackson Academy) ripped off a 79-yard run on the Generals' next possession and junior quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn. / St. Luke's) finished off the 4-play, 89-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead at the 3:57 mark of the first quarter.

The Generals forced a turnover on the next Sewanee drive and sophomore wide receiver Josh Malm (Scottsville, Va. / Monticello) took advantage with a 34-yard touchdown run four plays later for a 14-0 lead with 54 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Tigers (1-1) drove the ball 75 yards on the next possession, but sophomore defensive back Michael Shields (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Country Day) forced a fumble at the W&L 6-yardline and sophomore defensive back Grey Reames (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell) recovered on the 7-yardline to give the Generals the ball back.  Nelson then scored on an 82-yard touchdown run three plays later for a 21-0 W&L lead that it carried into the break.

Sewanee forced W&L punts on the Generals' first two drives of the second half and cut it to a 21-10 game with 4:23 left in the third quarter following a 37-yard field goal from senior placekicker Callum Wishart (Leeds, England/Ooltewah) and a 14-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Cody Daniel (Tracy, Calif./Tracy).

However, the Blue & White used a 45-yard run by sophomore running back Walker Brand (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) to spearhead a 9-play, 83-yard drive that was capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from Nelson for a 28-10 lead with 12:34 remaining in posting the win.

On offense, the Generals racked up 423 yards, including 407 yards on the ground led by Nelson, who rushed 15 times for 108 yards and three touchdowns.  He also completed 3-of-9 passes for 16 yards, but fumbled four times, losing three of them.  Maxwell totaled 91 yards on three carries and caught two passes for 10 yards.  Brand amassed 77 yards rushing on four carries and had one catch for six yards.  Junior defensive lineman Rhett Delk (Johns Creek, Ga. / Wesleyan School) and senior linebacker Moody Heard (Houston, Texas / Episcopal) led the defense with nine tackles each.  Heard added a half sack and two forced fumbles.  Senior linebacker Jimmy Moynahan (Sandwich, Mass. / Boston College High) added five tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Sewanee gained 323 total yards and were paced by Daniel, who rushed 18 times for 51 yards and a touchdown and completed 8-of-19 passes for 120 yards.  The Tigers fumbled seven times, losing three of them.  Senior defensive back Alex Kops (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock) totaled a team-best 11 tackles.

Washington and Lee will now enjoy a bye week before returning to action on Friday, September 25 when it hosts the Apprentice School for a 7:00 pm contest.  The Generals will be seeking their first 3-0 start in 15 years.
