Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team had three players record double-digit kills in a 3-2 victory over Averett on Friday at the W&L Invitational.
The Cougars (6-2) won the first set, 27-25, and then the Generals (4-2) evened the match by taking the second, 25-21. The Blue and White won the third, 25-18, but AU claimed the fourth 25-23. In the fifth set, Averett jumped out to an 8-6 lead, but W&L won nine of the next 13 points to claim the set (15-12) and the match.
Senior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) led the team with 16 kills on 39 attempts with three errors for a .333 hitting percentage. Junior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) notched 14 kills on 24 attempts with three errors for a .458 hitting percentage. Shand also added four blocks.
First-year outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) tallied 13 kills and a match-high 19 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) also recorded double-digit digs with 13. Sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) distributed the ball on offense with 41 assists.
Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Shields (Keeling, Va./Dan River) led all players with 28 kills. She also registered 11 digs and four service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Christiana Summa (Poquson, Va./Poquoson) and senior defensive specialist Katelyn Holley (Dry Fork, Va./Westover Christian Academy) each had 12 digs.
The victory extended W&L's home winning streak to 23 matches. The Blue and White's last defeat in the Warner Center came on September 7, 2013 against fifth-ranked Christopher Newport. The program record for consecutive home victories is 25, which happened over the 2005, 2006 and 2007 seasons. The Generals played seventh-ranked Wittenberg later on Friday.
