Franz Hits Game-Winner to Give W&L a 76-74 Win at Randolph

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Junior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) hit a game-winning three-pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining to give the Washington and Lee men's basketball team a 76-74 victory at Randolph in the final game of the regular season on Saturday.

The Generals (10-15, 7-9 ODAC) took a 73-64 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by first-year forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) with 4:55 left in the contest. It would be the final points of the game for Murtha, as he tied his career-high with 31.

The nine-point lead was the largest of the contest for W&L, but the team would not score again until Franz's game winner on its final possession. The WildCats (12-13, 6-10 ODAC) scored 10 straight points, capped on a three-pointer by junior forward Jason Eddie, to take a 74-43 lead with 1:05 on the clock.

Following a Generals' timeout, Murtha missed a jumper with 40 seconds remaining, and Randolph took over possession after the ball went out of bounds. W&L fouled first-year guard Jacoby Reid with 37.5 seconds left in the game, and Reid missed both of his free throw attempts.

After calling another timeout, the Generals moved the ball around on its final possession, with first-year forward Joe Sherwood (Madison, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) ending up with it at the top of the key with 10 seconds remaining.

Sherwood passed the ball out to Franz in front of the W&L bench, and from three feet behind the three-point line, Franz sunk a triple to give the Blue and White a 76-74 lead with 3.5 seconds on the clock. The WildCats had one final possession, but Reid's three-pointer as time expired was short.

Murtha totaled his 31 points by hitting 9-of-16 from the field and 13-of-15 from the foul line. He also grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to register the third double-double of his career.

Sophomore point guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) scored 13 points, and sophomore guard Stephen Himmelberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) notched 11 points off the bench. Senior forward Patrick O'Connor (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds and five assists, while Franz finished with five points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Eddie led Randolph with 19 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Zach Desgain had 18 points and four steals, and junior guard Corey Brown totaled 16 points and four assists.

The Generals had one of their best shooting performances of the season, finishing at 52.1 percent (25-of-48) from the field, 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from beyond the arc and 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the charity stripe. The WildCats went 25-of-52 (48.1 percent) from the floor, 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from long range and 17-of-25 (68.0 percent) from the foul line.

The win secured the seventh seed in the ODAC Tournament for the Generals, and they will host the No. 10 seed on Monday. W&L will not know its opponent until after the Eastern Mennonite-Roanoke game is played on Sunday at 4:30 pm.
