W&L Women's Basketball Downed at Bridgewater, 73-63

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater closed the game with a 27-9 run to produce a 73-63 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday at Nininger Hall.

W&L (14-8, 7-7) led 54-46 with 11:31 left in the game following a jumper by sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly).  The Eagles (12-10, 7-7) then scored the next six points to close within two (54-52), but Clifford made another jumper and the teams traded three-pointers to make it a 59-55 game with 6:47 remaining.  It was at that point that the Generals went cold from the floor, making just one of their final 12 shots.

Bridgewater went on a 12-0 run over the next 5:52 fueled by five points from sophomore guard Kara Campbell and four points from junior guard Jessi Strom to take a 68-59 lead with 55 seconds remaining.  Junior guard Alena Hamrick (Roanoke, Va. / Hidden Valley) split a pair of free throws twice in the final 40 seconds, but that was all the Generals could muster as the Eagles claimed the win.

W&L grabbed the lead at 22-20 on a jumper by junior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) at the 9:12 mark of the first half and held the advantage until a 7-0 run by the Eagles gave them a 41-38 lead just 2:44 into the second half.  The Generals took the lead back two possessions later following a three-point play by Hendricks and a triple from Clifford at the 15:37 mark (44-41).  W&L held the upper hand until the BC closing run that was due, in large part, to holding a 27-17 edge on the glass in the second half.

For the game, W&L shot 40.3 percent (25-62) from the floor and committed just 14 turnovers.  However, the Generals were out-rebounded, 43-36, and were out-scored, 16-5, at the foul line.

Clifford led W&L with 18 points and five rebounds, while junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) tallied 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.  Hendricks added nine points, and eight rebounds.

Strom paced four players in double figures for Bridgewater with 20 points.  Sophomore forward Heather Cantrell posted 18 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Cassidy Burkholder notched 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals.  Junior center Oshene Kelly contributed 10 points as well.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Randolph for a 7:00 pm contest.
