Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore guard Khory Moore (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) scored 26 points to lead fifth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan to a 71-53 victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team at the Warner Center on Saturday.

The Marlins (19-4, 11-3 ODAC) jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the opening seven minutes of the game. VWC held a 17-9 advantage with 8:16 left in the half, but a free throw by sophomore guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) and a layup by first-year forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) ignited a 7-0 run for the Generals (8-14, 5-9 ODAC) to trim the margin to one (17-16) with 6:31 remaining before intermission.

Moore responded with a triple to push the lead back to four, 20-16, and then the Marlins scored 11 of the final 18 points of the half to take a 31-23 lead into the break.

A couple of free throws by Murtha closed the gap to six, 31-25, at the start of the second. Senior guard Greg Montgomery (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) netted four straight free throws, and then Moore drained a three-pointer to stretch the advantage to 13 (38-25). After two more free throws by Moore, a layup by sophomore guard Tim Jones (Richmond, Va./Henrico) capped a Marlins' 11-0 run to push the lead to 42-25 with 16:44 left in the game.

VWC eventually extended its lead to 24 points, before reaching the final margin of 71-53. Neither team shot the ball well from the field, as W&L finished at 37.2 percent (16-of-43) and the Marlins ended the game at 34.5 percent (19-of-55). VWC did make 9-of-20 (45.0 percent) triples, with Moore finishing the game 7-of-9. The Blue and White hit only 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from beyond the arc.

Murtha led the Generals with 19 points on 5-of-10 from the field and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Kleinlein added nine points, while grabbing a career-high eight rebounds.

Along with Moore's 26, Montgomery notched 12 points and junior forward Brandon Mitchell (Albany, Ga./Westover) scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Generals next play at Roanoke on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
