W&L Women's Basketball Tops Chatham, 74-50

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Sophomore forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) notched a career-high 16 points, and the Washington and Lee women's basketball team held Chatham to 26.7 percent (20-of-75) shooting en route to a 74-50 victory at the Daytona Beach Shootout on Monday afternoon.

The Generals (4-5) scored the game's opening 13 points in the first four minutes of the contest. Junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) netted four points during the stretch, while senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) had five. The Cougars (4-5) trimmed the deficit to 10 (21-11) by the end of the first period.

Chatham started the second on a 14-4 spurt and tied the game, 25-25, on a layup by junior forward Jesse Hinkle with 4:41 left until halftime. The teams would trade baskets over the final five minutes, and the Blue and White held a 35-34 advantage at the break.

W&L started the third period with five straight points on an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) and a layup by senior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) to grab a 40-34 lead with 7:53 left in the quarter. A layup by senior forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) with 4:42 remaining in the period stretched the Generals' lead to 45-38. From there, each team would only net one free throw the rest of the quarter, and W&L led by seven (46-39) entering the fourth.

The Generals went on an 8-4 run to begin the final period to regain a double-digit advantage, 54-43, with 6:39 left in the game. A layup by Hendricks with 3:59 on the clock pushed the margin to 14 (62-48) with 3:59 on the clock. First-year guard Ashley McClain netted a jumper with 3:50 left to cut the lead to 62-50, but it would be the final points of the game for the Cougars. The Blue and White ended the contest on a 12-0 run to reach the final margin.

W&L had six players score at least nine points. Kelly came off the bench and made 7-of-13 shots to total her 16 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds and had one block. Hendricks registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Corvino totaled nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. With her two steals, she moved her career total to 152, which tied her for ninth on W&L's all-time list. Allie Long '11 finished her career with 152.

The Generals grabbed a season-high 60 rebounds compared to 44 for Chatham. Hinkle led the Cougars with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She finished 7-of-13 from the floor, while the rest of the team shot a combined 13-of-62.

W&L returns to action on January 2, when they take part in the Roanoke Invitational. The Blue and White plays Swarthmore at 4:00 pm and then faces Wesleyan (Ga.) on January 3 at 4:00 pm.
