W&L Women's Basketball Easily Dispatches Hollins, 72-50

HOLLINS, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team closed the first quarter with a 12-2 run and never looked back in claiming a 72-50 win at Hollins on Wednesday evening.

The Generals (3-3, 1-1) trailed 11-9 with 2:57 left in the opening period after a layup by Hollins (3-4, 0-2) first-year forward Sally Sroge. However, senior forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) knotted the game with a jumper 30 seconds later, igniting the run that gave W&L a 21-13 lead entering the second period.  Senior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) scored five points during the surge, while sophomore guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) added a triple and sophomore forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) sunk a jumper.

Both teams went cold from the floor in the second period, but the Generals maintained an eight-point lead (29-21) at the break.

W&L opened the game up with a 26-16 advantage in the third period behind an early barrage from beyond the arc.  Perszyk nailed a pair of triples in the opening 2:27 of the period and both Corvino and sophomore guard Andrea Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) hit three's in the period, as W&L carried a 55-37 lead into the final 15 minutes of action.

The Generals' lead swelled to as many as 25 points (66-41) with 7:23 left following another Perszyk three-pointer.

W&L finished 31-of-67 (.463) from the floor, assisting on 23 of the 31 made field goals.  The Blue & White also carried a 44-30 advantage on the glass.

Perszyk led the way with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including 5-of-13 from beyond the arc.  Corvino posted 12 points, while Redding added nine points, five rebounds and four assists.  Senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.

Hollins shot just 34.5 percent (19-55) from the floor led by Sroge, who totaled 18 points and four rebounds.  Junior guard Jewellanna Parfitt added 14 points.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Sewanee for a 12:00 pm contest.
