W&L Men's Basketball Tames the Tigers, 75-66

LEXINGTON, Va. — Led by junior guard Andy Kleinlein's (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) 16 second-half points, the Washington and Lee men's basketball team defeated Hampden-Sydney, 75-66, on Wednesday night at the Warner Center.

The Tigers (3-2, 0-1 ODAC) came out hot from behind the arc, making their first four three-pointers to grab a 16-6 lead with 14:56 left in the half. H-SC held an 18-8 lead two minutes later, but the Generals (4-2, 1-0 ODAC) responded with a 21-4 run over the next seven minutes of play to take a 29-22 advantage with 6:27 remaining in the half.

During the spurt, senior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) netted seven points and one assist and Kleinlein chipped in five points. The two teams went back and forth over the final six minutes, and a triple by first-year guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) with 36 seconds on the clock gave the Blue and White a 37-30 lead at the break.

H-SC scored the first four points of the second half to trim the deficit to three (37-34), but back-to-back layups by Kleinlein and sophomore forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) pushed the margin back to seven, 41-34, with 17:23 remaining in the game.

The lead would fluctuate between five and seven points over the next six minutes, with W&L holding a 47-40 advantage with 11:41 on the clock. A layup by first-year guard Logan Samuels (Bowie, Md./Potomac) and two straight jumpers by senior guard Mike Murray (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) closed the gap to one, 47-46, with 10:53 remaining in the contest.

The Generals countered with a jumper by Kleinlein and a three-pointer by senior guard Darren Douglas (Elmsford, N.Y./Rye Country Day) to stretch the lead back to six (52-46). After a free throw by Murray, Kleinlein sank a triple and then Kearns made two free throws to push the lead to double-digits, 57-47, with 6:34 left in the game.

The Blue and White extended the margin to 14 points, 65-51, on a layup by sophomore forward Nicholas George (Charleston, W. Va./Charleston Catholic) with 3:13 on the clock, and W&L made 8-of-9 free throws in the closing minutes to reach the final margin.

Kleinlein finished with a game-high 21 points, two rebounds and four assists. Kearns totaled a career-high 15 points, six rebounds and three steals. Murtha recorded 10 points and seven rebounds, and Franz notched nine points, eight assists, three rebounds and two steals.

After making their first four triples, the Tigers missed their final 15 attempts from behind the arc and finished the night 4-of-19 (21.2 percent). W&L shot 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from long range, and made 26-of-50 (52.0 percent) shots from the field.

First-year guard Andrew Evans (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) led H-SC with 20 points, three rebounds and four assists, while shooting 7-of-11. Senior forward Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham) added 16 points and three rebounds.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host 15th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan at 2:30 pm.
