W&L Volleyball Eliminated from ODAC Tournament by VWC, 3-0

ASHLAND, Va. — Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) totaled a match-high 15 digs, but the third-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team fell to second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan, 3-0, on Saturday in the ODAC semifinals at Randolph-Macon.

The Marlins (25-9) quickly grabbed the first set, 25-13. The Generals (18-15) pulled closer in the second, but VWC still took the set, 25-21. In the third, W&L held a 13-8 advantage, but six straight points by the Marlins gave VWC a 14-13 advantage. Virginia Wesleyan then closed out the match by claiming the third, 25-21.

With Volk's 15 digs, she pushed her season total to 500, which is the fifth-best single-season mark in program history.

Senior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) led W&L with 15 kills and six digs. She finishes her career with 1,400 kills in her four seasons, which is the fifth-highest total in W&L history.

Junior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) added eight kills on 11 attempts with two errors (.545 hitting percentage). Sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had 29 assists and seven digs.

Junior outside hitter Tiffany Barrett led the Marlins with 16 kills, while senior libero Marin Crowder posted 10 digs. Senior Kirstin Sessoms and sophomore Emille Pierson split the setting duties. Sessoms had 17, while Pierson notched 15.

With the loss, the Generals' 2015 season is now compete.
