Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Sixth-seeded Roanoke advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday afternoon after posting a 5-3 edge on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw against third-seeded Washington and Lee at Watt Field.
The Generals (13-3-1) grabbed an early 1-0 lead as first-year midfielder Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School) received a cross from sophomore midfielder Caroline Hahn (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) and slipped the ball past Roanoke senior keeper Sarah Dvorak (Mechanicsville, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) at the 5:20 mark of the first half.
W&L carried its lead into the 70th-minute, when junior forward Linnea Kremer (Cincinnati, Ohio / Walnut Hills) fed senior midfielder Anna Carter (Lynchburg, Va. / Jefferson Forest) for the equalizing goal for the Maroons (10-7-2).
The Generals had several good looks at goal in regulation and overtime, but could not come up with the game-winner, as both teams headed to a penalty kick shootout.
Dvorak came up with a stop on the first penalty kick for the Generals and the Maroons were successful on all five of their kicks in advancing to the semifinals.
Senior goalie Addie Healy (Waterford, Va. / Woodgrove) played all 110 minutes of the contest and recorded six saves for W&L. Dvorak saw the entire match in goal for Roanoke and posted six saves as well.
For the game, W&L out-shot Roanoke, 17-13, and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Maroons will face the winner of No. 2 Shenandoah vs. No. 7 Randolph-Macon in the semifinals on Saturday. The match will be played at the highest remaining seed.
The Generals will now wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
