NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport had all five starters score in double figures as the Captains posted a 79-63 win over Washington and Lee in women's basketball on Sunday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

CNU (1-0) led just 9-6 following the first period, but outscored the Generals 19-10 in the second quarter to carry a 28-16 lead into the break.  Sophomore guard Makenzie Fancher scored seven points in the frame to spearhead the Captains' offense.

The Generals (0-1) recovered from their cold shooting in the first half to produce 28 points in the third quarter behind 12 points from sophomore guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) and six from sophomore forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic).  Perszyk scored all 12 points from beyond the arc, hitting four from distance in the final 4:34 of the third period.  Her third triple of the frame cut the CNU lead to just 47-41 with 1:49 left and the Captains carried a 53-44 lead into the final period.

A pair of Perszyk free throws made it a 55-46 game with 9:27 left, but the Captains scored the next seven points to assume a 62-46 lead with 7:08 remaining.  W&L made one final run, scoring seven straight points on a three-pointer by senior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) and back-to-back layups by Perszyk and junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) to make it a 10-point game (73-63) with 3:16 left.  However, the Generals missed their final nine shots from the floor as the Captains recorded the season-opening win.

For the game, W&L hit just 21-of-57 (.368) shots and committed 18 turnovers.  Perszyk led the way with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-10 from distance, while Redding finished with 15 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the foul line.  Corvino chipped in 12 points and a career-high seven steals.
