WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed four place-winners and finished seventh out of 15 teams at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday.
Senior Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) highlighted the Generals' afternoon by taking home first-place in the 184-pound bracket. He opened with a pin of Heidelberg's Eric Murdock in 6:31 and then notched a 9-5 win over Gabe Mahaney of Baldwin-Wallace. In the championship, he posted a 6-4 win over Ryan Shank of Waynesburg to improve to 8-0 on the season.
First-year Zach Bylykbashi (Burlington, Conn. / Southington) took home third-place honors at the 133-pound weight class after going 4-1 overall. He defeated Vincent Mion of St. Vincent by tech fall (16-0) in his opener and then notched a 16-4 major decision over Sam Oberlander of Millersville. He was defeated by Ryan Homack of Heidelberg by a score of 9-5. Homack went on to finish in second-place. Bylykbashi rebounded to record victory over Gordon Bieber of Waynesberg and he then notched a 9-8 win over Brandon Conrad of Heidelberg in the third-place match.
First-year Michael Dik (Boxford, Mass. / St. John's Prep) and sophomore Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) both placed sixth in their respective weight classes. Dik went 4-3 in the 141-pound bracket and Kaminer logged a 4-2 record in the 285-pound bracket.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it takes part in the Southern Virginia Duels. Action begins at 10:00 am.
