W&L Volleyball Rallies to Beat Shenandoah, 3-2

WINCHESTER, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team had a season-high four players with at least 10 kills in a 3-2 come from behind victory at Shenandoah on Wednesday.

The Hornets (10-8, 3-3 ODAC) edged the Generals (10-7, 5-0 ODAC) in the first set, 25-23. W&L rebounded by taking the second, 25-21. Shenandoah grabbed a 2-1 lead in the match, claiming the third set, 25-23, but the Blue and White pushed the contest to a fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-22.

In the final set, Shenandoah won nine of the first 15 points to take a 9-6 advantage. Starting with a kill by senior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic), the Generals won the next four points to gain a 10-9 lead. With the score at 12-11 in favor of W&L, the Blue and White won three of the final four points, including two kills by first-year outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) to win the set, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.

Lausberg and Guignon each totaled 16 kills to lead the team. Lausberg added 14 digs, four service aces and four blocks, while Guignon had 11 digs.

Junior middle blocker Ellie Darbyshire (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) notched a career-high 10 kills on just 13 attempts with one error for a .692 hitting percentage. She also had four blocks. Junior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) posted 10 kills, five digs and three blocks.

Sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) registered a career-high 55 assists to go along with seven digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) recorded 23 digs to lead all players.

Senior outside hitter Blakes Parkes led the Hornets with 15 kills, while junior middle blocker Rachel Roberts added 12 kills and six blocks. Junior setter Rachel Cerretani had a double-double with 46 assists and 11 digs.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they play a neutral-site contest against Frostburg State at 1:00 pm in Newport News, Va., and then later that day play at fourth-ranked Christopher Newport at 3:00 pm.
