No. 21 W&L Women's Soccer Takes Down Virginia Wesleyan, 3-2

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 21st-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team scored two first-half goals en route to posting a 3-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action on Saturday night at Foster Field.

The Generals (10-3, 6-2) started off the scoring with a tally in the 26th minute from junior forward Tricia Jessee (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) when she beat Marlins' (8-7, 6-1) junior goalkeeper Megan Gerhart.

W&L struck again just 3:28 later when first-year midfielder Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School) scored on a long pass from junior midfielder Katie Pettit (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch). The Blue and White took the 2-0 lead into intermission.

Virginia Wesleyan cut the lead to one just 4:48 into the second stanza after first-year midfielder Julia Downing found the back of the net off of an assist from first-year defender Brooke Adamchak.

Sophomore midfielder Caroline Hahn (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) tallied the Generals' third goal of the game when she scored off of a pass from the top of the box from first-year midfielder Megan Engleland (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) at the 65:50 mark to increase the lead to 3-1.

The Marlins responded with 7:18 remaining on the clock when junior defender Abigail Nickle found senior midfielder Kerry Knauss to reach the final margin of 3-2.

For the game, Washington and Lee out-shot Virginia Wesleyan, 21-10, and took nine corner kicks as opposed to the VWC's two.

First-year goalie Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) earned the win for the Generals, making one save in 90 minutes of action. Gerhart suffered the loss for the Marlins, playing the entire match in net and stopping nine shots. VWC also recorded one team save.

W&L returns to the field on Tuesday when it travels to Hollins for a 4:00 pm contest.
