W&L Men's Soccer Edged by Messiah in Overtime, 1-0

Box Score

GRANTHAM, Pa. — Senior midfielder Benji Kennel scored 5:33 into overtime to give Messiah a 1-0 victory over the Washington and Lee men's soccer team on Saturday evening at Shoemaker Field.

The Generals (7-3-1) had the fist scoring opportunity in overtime, but sophomore midfielder Austin Gilbert's (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) shot was saved by first-year goalkeeper Connor Bell at the 93:14 mark.

The Falcons (8-3-1) then moved the ball down the pitch with the ball finding the feet of junior defender Jacob Bender. He crossed the ball from the right side to the far post. First-year midfielder David Alejos made a diving header to pass the ball back across the goal to Kennel, and then Kennel stuck the ball into the back of the net to give Messiah the 1-0 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) was the tough luck loser for W&L. He played the entire contest and made a career high eight saves. Bell also saw the full 95:33 of action, stopping four shots.

Messiah led in shots, 19-7, and had four corner kicks, with the Blue and White not taking one. The loss ended W&L's five-game winning streak.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they play at Lynchburg at 7:00 pm.
