W&L Field Hockey Blanks Ferrum, 5-0

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Sophomore defender Maggie Sands (Glen Arm, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored two goals to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Ferrum on Thursday in a neutral-site contest at the Smith River Complex in Martinsville, Va.

The two scores were the first two in Sands' collegiate career. She notched the Generals' (4-5) third goal of the game at the 32:43 mark off an assist from first-year midfielder Audrey Brady (Far Hills, N.J./Brooks School), and Sands pushed the W&L lead to 4-0 just 8:37 into the second half for her second goal of the game.

The Generals used all three of their goalkeepers in the contest. First-year Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) started the game, and she earned the victory, while not facing a shot in 22:25. Sophomore Jacqueline Llewellyn (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) played the next 21:13, making one save. Senior Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) saw the final 26:22 of action and stopped one shot. Sophomore Courtney Gosslin played the full 70 minutes for the Panthers (1-8) and made nine saves.

Sophomore Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) registered the game-winning goal 3:10 into the opening period. It marked her third goal of the season. First-year forward Allie DiPietro (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest School) gave the Generals a 2-0 lead five minutes later. It was the first collegiate goal for DiPietro.

Brady notched the fifth and final tally for the Blue and White with 25:46 left in the game. It was the first collegiate goal for Brady, and DiPietro added her first collegiate assist on the score. 

W&L controlled the ball for a majority of the contest taking 33 shots compared to two for Ferrum. The Blue and White also held a 16-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host 10th-ranked Lynchburg at 1:00 pm.
