W&L Women's Basketball Downs Roanoke, 63-49

SALEM, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team already equaled its best record in two seasons in producing a 63-49 win over Roanoke on Wednesday evening at the Bast Center.

The win improved W&L to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC, tying the team's win total from the 2012-13 campaign (9-16).

Roanoke (4-7, 1-2) jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the opening 15:46 of the contest, but the Generals assumed a six-point lead (15-9) following a 9-0 run over the next 3:56 buoyed by seven points from junior guard Alena Hamrick (Roanoke, Va. / Hidden Valley).

W&L continued to stretch its lead to 27-16 at the 5:09 mark of the first half, before the Maroons used a 10-0 run featuring six points from senior guard Tatum McKee and four from sophomore forward Cary Beahm to make it a 27-26 game with 2:16 left to play in the first half.  However, the Generals responded with five straight points before the break and six consecutive immediately after the half to push out to a 38-26 lead just 1:55 into the second stanza.

Roanoke used a 7-0 spurt to close within five points (48-43) with 6:12 left to play, but the Generals responded with an immediate 8-0 run featuring a pair of three-pointers by junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) to extend the lead back to double digits (56-45) with 4:41 remaining.  The Maroons got no closer than nine points the rest of the way as W&L won its third straight contest.

W&L limited RC to just 31.2 percent shooting (15-48) and the Generals forced 21 Maroon turnovers.  The Blue & White shot 41.0 percent (25-61) and received 25 points off the bench.

Corvino led the Generals with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Hamrick notched nine points, while first-year forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) and sophomore forward Samantha Sharman (Huntersville, N.C. / Hopewell) chipped in eight points each.

Beahm tallied 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the way for Roanoke.  McKee added nine markers.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday when it hosts Emory & Henry for a 5:00 pm contest.
