Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore point guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) made two free throws with 6.8 seconds remaining to give the Washington and Lee men's basketball team a 77-76 victory over Emory & Henry on Wednesday at the Warner Center.
The Generals (4-8, 1-2 ODAC) trailed 62-53 with 10:07 left in the second half, but back-to-back triples by junior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) and a four-point play by Kleinlein capped a 10-0 run to give W&L a 63-62 lead with 8:52 on the clock.
The teams went back and forth over the next six minutes but a three-pointer by first-year guard Nicholas George (Charleston, W. Va./Charleston Catholic) with 2:59 remaining gave the Blue and White a 73-70 lead. Each team went scoreless over their next two possessions, but the Wasps (1-11, 0-3 ODAC) cut the lead to one (73-72) on a layup by first-year guard John Shelor (Giles, Va./Giles) at the 1:40 mark.
W&L failed to score on its next trip down, and sophomore guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va./Thomas Dale) gave E&H a 74-73 lead on a layup with 57 seconds on the clock. Turner extended the advantage to 75-73 when he split a pair of free throws with 41 ticks left.
Franz tied the game (75-75) by making two free throws with 30 seconds to go, but was whistled for a foul with 14 seconds remaining. Sophomore guard Ryan Gravley (Austinville, Va./Carroll County) split the two from the line, and after a W&L timeout, Kleinlein drove into the paint and was fouled attempting the game-winning layup. He sunk both free throws, and Turner missed a jumper as time expired to give W&L the win.
