COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team lost to McDaniel (27-22) and Ursinus (37-13) on Saturday in Collegeville, Pa. Once again, the Generals (2-14, 0-6) competed with less than a full squad, forfeiting four weight classes in each match.
Junior Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa./Haverford School) improved to 23-6 on the season at 184 pounds, defeating Nicholas Cross of McDaniel, 12-3, and earning a 12-4 victory over Robert Rein of Ursinus. Tassoni is just three wins away from breaking the W&L season record for wins held by Jim Crytzer '77 and Sam Campbell '12.
W&L had two other wrestlers win both of their matches on Saturday. First-year Evan Kueffner (Grass Lake, Mich./Lumen Christi Catholic) pinned Ricky Tisinger of McDaniel 3:10 into the match at 197 pounds, and then pinned Paul Aaroe of Ursinus at the 2:16 mark.
At 285 pounds, first-year Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) pinned Rob Donovon of McDaniel in 4:38, and then defeated Zachary Trauger of Ursinus, 5-0.
First-years Alex Pollera (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) and Zachary Papin (Carrollton, Texas/St. Mark's) each picked up a win against McDaniel. Pollera defeated Anthoney Savage, 8-7, at 141 pounds, and Papin had a 15-10 win over Benjamin Mitchell at 149 pounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts NYU and Stevens Institute beginning at 11:00 am.
