Generals' Comeback Falls Short at Bridgewater, 72-69

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Sophomore point guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) missed a potential game-tying three-pointer as time expired, and the Washington and Lee men's basketball team lost at Bridgewater, 72-69, on Saturday.

The Generals (7-12, 4-6 ODAC) trailed 70-63 with 24 seconds on the clock, but a triple at the top of the key by senior forward Patrick O'Connor (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) trimmed the deficit to four (70-66) with 13 seconds remaining.

After the Eagles (10-9, 5-5 ODAC) split a pair of free throws, a full-court pass by Kleinlein found sophomore guard Stephen Himmelberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), and Himmelberg took a step behind the arc and drilled a three in front of the W&L bench to pull the Generals within two, 71-69, with nine seconds left in the game.

The Eagles once again split a pair of free throws and Kleinlein pushed the ball down the court. He made a move at the top of the key to free himself, but his three-point attempt hit front iron and Bridgewater secured the 72-69 win.

Senior forward Ed Reddick and senior guard Kyle Welty led Bridgewater. The duo each scored 25 points to account for 50 of the Eagles' 72 points. Reddick also totaled seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Welty finished 9-of-13 from the floor and notched three blocks.

First-year forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) led the Generals with 18 points. He finished 5-of-8 from the field, 8-of-9 from the foul line and grabbed eight rebounds. Kleinlein ended the night with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, and first-year forward Joe Sherwood (Madison, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

W&L held a 20-14 lead with 10:28 left before intermission, but Bridgewater finished the half on a 21-6 run to hold a nine-point (35-26) advantage at the break.

The Generals closed the gap to three in the first five minutes of the second stanza, when a Sherwood layup at the 15:45 mark made the score 39-36. Neither team would go up by more than seven the rest of the game.

W&L next plays Randolph on Wednesday at the Warner Center at 8:00 pm.
