Clifford's Triple Propels Generals to 76-69 OT Win Over Roanoke

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) hit a triple as time expired to send the Washington and Lee women's basketball team into overtime against Roanoke Tuesday evening at the Warner Center. The Generals (14-3, 7-2) went onto defeat the Maroons (6-11, 3-6), 76-69.

Roanoke held an 11-point lead (57-46) with 4:29 remaining, but a jumper by sophomore forward Samantha Sharman (Huntersville, N.C. / Hopewell) at the 4:07 mark ignited an 8-0 run that cut Maroons' lead to 57-55 at the 1:07 mark.

Following an empty possession for each team, Roanoke sophomore forward Cary Beahm (Dendron, Va. / Tidewater Academy) was fouled with 14 seconds left on the clock. Beahm split a pair of free throws to push the Maroon lead to three, 58-55.

The Generals brought the ball down the court, and junior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) missed a three with seven seconds left. Junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) corralled the rebound and passed the ball out to Clifford who drained the triple from the top of the key to tie the game.

Hendricks made a pair of free throws with 3:05 left in overtime to give W&L a 63-52 advantage and the Generals did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the contest. Hendricks and first-year guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) had back-to-back triples to push the margin to 69-64 with 1:19 remaining. Corvino then made four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Blue and White.

For the game, Roanoke out-shot W&L 51.9 percent (28-54) to 28.8 percent (23-80) from the field, but the Generals grabbed 24 offensive rebounds which led to 26 more shots for the Blue and White. The Generals shot 33.3 percent (13-39) from behind the arc and 77.3 percent (17-22) from the charity stripe while Roanoke did not attempt a three-pointer the entire game.

Perszyk led the Generals with 18 points, going 6-of-17 from deep. Clifford finished with 16 points, while Corvino and Hendricks both chipped in 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. First-year forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) also pulled in 10 boards. Senior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) dished out a team-high five assists.

Beahm scored a game-high 24 points and had six rebounds. Junior guard Anna Carter (Lynchburg, Va. / Jefferson Forest) tallied 11 points and eight boards, while first-year forward Ellen Wagner (Wrentham, Mass. / King Philip) added 10 points. Senior guard Tatum McKee (Cornelius, N.C. / North Mecklenburg) also recorded eight boards.

W&L returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Guilford for a 2:00 pm contest.
