LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team defeated VMI and Ferrum at a tri-meet held at the Clark King Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Generals topped the Keydets, 170-51, and downed the Panthers, 185-27.
Sophomore Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) led the Blue and White, winning two individual events and participating on one winning relay. Haley was joined by sophomores Trenten Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) and Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal), and first-year John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic) on the winning 200-yard medley relay squad. The quartet touched the wall in 1:38.93.
Haley also claimed the 100-yard backstroke (53.50) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.45), while Babcock took the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.37.
First-years Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) and Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic School) also won two individual events apiece. Thetford won the 50-yard freestyle (21.22) and the 100-yard freestyle (47.42), while Schammel finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.72) and the 400-yard IM (4:22.07).
First-year Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) touched the wall in 10:15.04 in the 1000-yard freestyle for first-place honors and junior Billy Fries (Kirkwood, Mo. / Kirkwood) clocked in at 5:00.58 to garner first place laurels in the 500-yard freestyle.
Sophomores Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) and Harrison Westgarth (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) also claimed individual events for W&L (8-1). Burns took the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.99 and Westgarth won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:19.08.
The Generals return to the pool on February 13, when they travel to the Greensboro Aquatics Center to participate in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship.
