First-half Run Carries Guilford Past W&L Men's Hoops

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College used a 23-4 run in the first half to produce a 71-56 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Saturday at Ragan-Brown Field House.

The Generals (6-11, 3-5) opened with a 10-2 lead keyed by five quick points from junior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C. / Ravenscroft).  W&L maintained a 13-9 lead at the 12:14 mark following a layup by junior forward Jok Asiyo (Stroudsburg, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East) at the 12:14 mark.

Guilford (13-4, 6-2) then took control of the game from that point, going on the aforementioned run to snag a 33-17 lead with 4:27 left in the first half.  After first-year guard Hunter Jackson split a pair of free throws to make it 13-10 at the 11:57 mark, the Quakers exploded led by three straight triples from sophomore forward Trever Hyatt.  All told, W&L hit just 1-of-7 shots and committed six turnovers during the GC spurt.  On the other side of the court, Guilford hit 8-of-11 from the floor in amassing a 16-point advantage.  A three-pointer by senior guard Matt McCarthy gave the Quakers a 43-24 lead at the break.

The Guilford lead swelled to as many as 24 points (56-32) after the breaking following another McCarthy triple, before W&L closed the gap to 14 points (60-46) with 10:37 left to play on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo. / Chaminade College Prep).  However, that would be as close as the Blue & White would get for the remainder of the afternoon.

The Generals finished the day 19-of-47 (.404) from the floor and were led by Franz's 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.  First-year forward Joe Sherwood (Madison, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) posted 10 points, while first-year forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) logged five points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Guilford, which shot 48.1 percent (26-54) from the floor and drilled nine (9-21) three-pointers, was paced by Hyatt's 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from distance.  McCarthy, junior forward Jonny Rice and senior forward Will Koppenhaver notched 12 points each.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Hampden-Sydney for a 7:00 pm contest.
