LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Maryville, 3-1, on Saturday to win the 2014 W&L Invitational. Out of the six teams competing at the invite, the Generals were the lone team to finish 4-0.

W&L won the first set 25-20, and were leading 14-11 in the second, when first-year defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) was subbed in to serve. She led the Blue and White to seven straight points, including one ace, to put the team up, 21-11. The squad would go on to take the set, 25-16.

The Scots (4-4) responded by winning the third, 25-15, but the Generals closed out the match in the fourth, 25-15. For her effort in the match and the invitational, junior setter Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) was named the Tournament MVP. She finished the contest with 34 assists, two kills, two aces, eight digs and five blocks.

Junior middle blocker Jenna Gustafson (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) was also named to the All-Tournament Team. She had nine kills on 16 attempts (.438), along with five blocks, in the win over Maryville.

Junior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) tied for the team lead in kills with nine. Senior defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) had a team-high 12 digs, while junior outside hitter Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) added 10.

Sophomore outside hitter Abrianna Jones (Spring Hill, Tenn./Spring Hill) led the Scots with 14 kills on 28 attempts, while sophomore right side Julie Vineyard (Morristown, Tenn./Morristown West) totaled 10 kills on 13 attempts.

The Generals next play against Gallaudet in a neutral-site contest at Bridgewater on Friday at 4:00 pm.
