Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior defender Cary Carabasi (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton) scored with less than 10 minutes left in regulation to lift the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Catholic on Saturday afternoon at the CUA Soccer Field.
Carabasi scored the game-winner off a corner kick taken by sophomore Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo. / Barstow School), depositing the ball in the goal at the 80:01 mark.
After a scoreless first half which featured a red card by Catholic (1-2) senior goalkeeper Torsten Meuschke just 1:47 into the game, CUA got things started just 3:13 into the second half when sophomore defender Miguel Hernandez received a penalty kick and beat W&L senior goalkeeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) for a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals carried their advantage until the 65th-minute when senior forward Zach Colby (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) headed the ball in the goal off a corner kick taken by sophomore forward David Cohen (Chesterfield, N.J. / Northern Burlington County Regional) to knot the game at 1-1, setting the scene for Carabasi's game-winner.
W&L (3-0) held a 19-10 advantage in shots and took seven corner kicks as compared to three for Catholic.
Meuschke did not face a shot in his near two minutes in goal. He was spelled by sophomore Steven Lukas, who totaled five saves.
The Generals will look to claim their first 4-0 start since the 2006 season on Tuesday when they host Southern Virginia for a 4:30 pm contest.
