Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — For the second straight year, the Washington and Lee volleyball team went five sets against Marietta. After winning in five sets at Marietta last year, the Generals (4-1) once again secured a 3-2 victory over the Pioneers (1-6), this time in the Warner Center on Friday as part of the W&L Invitational.
W&L took the first set, 25-16, but Marietta evened the match by winning the second, 25-17. The Blue and White grabbed a 2-1 lead by snagging the third, 25-13, but again the Pioneers bounced back to win the fourth, 27-25.
In the fifth set, Marietta held a 7-3 lead, but the Generals won five straight points to take the lead, 8-7, and then held on for a 15-12 set victory to take the match.
W&L had a balanced offense with four players registering double-digit kills, which marked the first time this season the team had multiple players total at least 10 kills.
Junior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) led the squad with 13 kills, junior outside hitter Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) had 12 and junior middle blocker Jenna Gustafson (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) and first-year outside hitter Mary Silliman (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) each had 10. Silliman registered her first collegiate double-double by adding 14 digs.
Senior defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) tallied a career-high 23 digs to lead all players. Her previous career best was 22. Junior setter Alex Kinzer (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) recorded a season-high 42 assists, along with a match-high five service aces.
Junior middle blocker Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) led the Pioneers with 13 kills, while first-year outside hitter Erica Denallo (Independence, Ohio/Indepenence) added 12. Denallo also notched a team-high 20 digs.
The Generals played Birmingham Southern later on Friday.
